Best Practice #3

Post

Community events are effective for outreach and subsequent follow-up for enrollment assistance.

Using community events, such as health fairs, or community festivals, are effective opportunities to provide information to families about affordable health insurance for their children. The best practice is to invite representatives from health plans, CHIs, community clinics, the County Welfare Department, and others to attend and provide information about health insurance coverage options.

To be effective, however, these partners should encourage families to complete referral cards, which can be used by the partners to follow-up directly with families to screen eligibility and assist them with enrollment. (Note: The corollary of this best practice is that such events are not suitable venues for enrollment events where families complete the application process unless proper up-front work has been done to make appointments for families wishing enrollment assistance.)
