As part of the Institute’s mission of providing local officials
with practical, impartial and easy-to-use resources, the
Institute has produced many tipsheets, whitepapers, booklets and
other types of publications.

A number of publications are available in two different ways:
Website users are welcome to individually review any
publication in electronic form and make any number of copies of
the publication without charge.
Hard copies of some publications are available for purchase

that orders can take two to three weeks to process. Rush delivery

The Institute for Local Government has online newsletters
available for local agency officials and anyone that is
interested in the latest resources that promote good government
at the local level.
The Institute has produced a number of publications designed to
help local officials meet both the legal requirements and the
public’s expectations of public servants. Many are
available for purchase in hard-copy as well as digital form.
The Institute offers a variety of publications and resources to
help local officials identify and apply policies and best
practices that support sustainable communities — places that
foster and maintain a high quality of life for their residents on
an ongoing basis. Longer handbooks and guides as well
as shorter whitepapers and tip sheets are available.
The Local Government 101 program offers resources and materials
that explain the nuts and bolts of local government structures
and processes for newly-elected officials, newly-hired staff, the
media and members of the public.
The Institute offers a variety of publications and resources to
help local officials more effectively apply public engagement
processes and strategies. This includes detailed guides as well
as shorter pieces that hit the main points of a topic, as well as
rosters of California youth commissions and citizen academies and
a list of resources from other organizations.
The Institute has prepared a number of resources in Spanish to
enhance understanding of how local government works among
officials, staff, media and members of the public.
