The Beacon Award
The Beacon Award:
Local Leadership toward Solving Climate Change
The CCAN Beacon Award recognizes local leadership and achievement in greenhouse gas reduction efforts. The program is designed to create meaningful incentives for cities and counties to devise and implement a broad range of aggressive greenhouse gas reduction programs. CCAN hopes to launch the Beacon Award in summer 2010.
Recognition will be tied to two key local agency accomplishments:
- Actual reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
- Actual reductions in energy use.
Award Levels
Silver, Gold, and Platinum award levels recognize progressively more ambitious reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and energy use. Each level of recognition requires a specific percentage reduction in greenhouse gas emission in the community and a specific reduction in energy use.
Support for Local Efforts
CCAN encourages investor-owned, municipal utilities, state agencies, non-profit organizations and other partners to channel assistance to participating communities. The theory is that these communities are following through on a concerted commitment to reducing greenhouse gases.
Application is Simple
Interested cities and counties will apply to CCAN to become program participants. The application will include:
- A resolution from the city council or county board of supervisors authorizing the community’s participation in the Beacon Award Program.
- A commitment to submit to CCAN:
- Designation of a lead staff person as a point of contact.
- A baseline greenhouse gas emissions inventory for agency facilities and the community as a whole.
- A Climate Action Plan that includes activities in all ten Climate Leadership Opportunity Areas (see list at left).
- Evidence of compliance with the recycling requirements of AB 939, the California Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989.
