AB 1234 Compliance Resources Available

California law requires many local officials to receive training on public service ethics laws and principles. The Institute has worked hard to help local agencies comply with these requirements as cost-effectively as possible.

  • Free Online Ethics Course. To help local officials meet their AB 1234 ethics training requirements, the Institute for Local Government and the Fair Political Practices Commission have developed a free online ethics training course. The course has been approved by the Attorney General's Office and Fair Political Practices Commission.
  • Ethics Training. Check out opportunities to attend Institute training sessions that satisfy AB 1234's requirements. The Institute also offers onsite training to local officials at conferences, regional meetings and at individual local agencies on a fee basis.
  • Basic Hard Copy Self-Study Tests Available. If you don't want to sit in front of a computer the Institiute offers two sets of self-study materials ($25 each; up to four weeks processing time required). Note: Local agencies can pre-purchase self-study coupons to facilitate their officials' use of the self study option. Coupon order form.
  • Advanced Self-Study. Did you already complete the basic AB 1234 training two years ago? Would you like to expand your knowledge by doing something new this time to comply with AB 1234? Or perhaps you took the Fair Political Practices Commission's online course or another course and need extra time to bring yourself up to the two-hour total requirement? The Institute offers AB 1234 advanced self-study credit in two, one-hour segments. Each one-hour exercise costs $25.
  • Trainer's Corner. Trainer qualifications and course content are determined by standards adopted by the Fair Political Practices Commission and Attorney General. The Institute offers agency attorneys materials necessary to provide AB 1234 training in-house, including a CD-Rom outlining reading requirements by the FPPC, sample PowerPoint slides and forms, and sample handouts. Ordering information.

Proceeds from workshops, self-study processing, and publications sales support the Institute's work in public service ethics.
