releases a new resource:
Collaborative Strategies for
Day Labor Centers
The Institute for Local Government has just released a new report, Collaborative Strategies for Day Labor Centers.

This guide will assist local officials, immigrant-serving organizations, day labor center planners and leaders, and others to understand how collaborative relationships, partnerships and processes can assist in the successful development and operations of a day labor center.

In response to the growing day labor market in the United States, many communities are creating formal hiring sites, generally called day worker or day labor centers. A number of local governments, immigrant-serving and other community based organizations, congregations and faith-based groups, and other local and regional nonprofits have chosen to establish these day labor centers to provide employment opportunities for workers, address community concerns about day labor practices, improve traffic safety, and protect workers.

While most day workers continue to seek work on street corners, in business parking lots or at gas stations, there are a number of these more formal centers throughout California where workers and employers can meet and transact business. These sites range from newly constructed buildings and rented trailers to tents in vacant lots.

A roster of formal day labor centers, stories of individual centers, publications and other resources to help cities and counties become more informed about day labor centers is available at www.ca-ilg.org/daylaborcenters.

Additional resources and information from the Institute's Public Engagement and Collaborative Governance program can be found at www.ca-ilg.org/engagement.
