Institute Mourns Passing of Harriet Miller

Post

The Institute for Local Government is profoundly saddened by the passing of one of its beloved leaders and former Board Chair, Harriet Miller.

Harriet received many honors over her long an distinguished career in public service.  Among them was the League of California Cities’ Past Presidents’ Lifetime Achievement Award.

In accepting that award, Harriet offered this advice to local elected officials.

  • Listen to and really care about your community.
  • Work to understand your constituents’ problems and try different ideas to solve them.
  • Don’t carry grudges.
  • Know that you will always learn more from your failures than from your successes.
  • Don’t try to hog all the credit — if you do a good job, you’ll be remembered.

We certainly will remember you Harriet.  Thanks so much for who you were and all you did.
