Santa Clara County Citizenship Collaborative

The Santa Clara County Citizenship Collaborative coordinated by the Office of Human Relations host an annual Citizenship Day that offers legal permanent residents free citizenship application assistance.  Collaborative members include: Asian Law Alliance; Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County; Center for Employment Training (CET); Immigrant Relations and Integration Services (IRIS) of Santa Clara County; and Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network (SIREN).

Libraries – Trusted Venue for Immigrants to Access Citizenship Resources

Libraries in the city of Los Angeles and San Diego, along with Riverside County are partnering with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and nonprofits to provide immigrants with citizenship information.

Partnership between Institute for Museum and Library Sciences and United States Citizenship and Immigration Services

The Institute for Museum and Library Sciences and United States Citizenship and Immigration Services signed a memorandum of understanding to provide public libraries with immigration and citizenship information, including training opportunities and educational literature for local librarians.

Oakley’s Community Citizenship Drive

You, Me, We = Oakley!, one of California’s first two welcoming initiatives, organized a citizenship drive where over 50 legal permanent residents completed their naturalization application (N-400) and are on their way to becoming U.S. citizens. In addition to the study materials, the Liberty Adult Education Team and the Opportunity Junction were on hand to register the applicants for ESL and civics classes.  The applicants also registered to participate in a Citizenship Supporter Program – an opportunity for a volunteer to work one-on-one with the applicants as they go through the citizenship process, study for their civics test and prepare for their citizenship interview.

Cupertino – Citizenship Classes at Senior Center

Victor Wong – an exemplary volunteer – teaches citizenship classes at the City of Cupertino’s Senior Center operated by the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation. These classes enroll legal permanent residents over the age of fifty who are eligible to apply for naturalization. The eight-week course covers United States History, salient aspects of the US Constitution, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in the United States of America. The class also features guest speakers from the regional offices of the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Citizenship.

California Cities Combat Immigration Fraud

Fresno and Los Angeles are the California cities working with federal agencies (Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) to combat immigration services scams through enforcement, education and continued collaboration. Efforts include increasing the number of legitimate immigration legal service provider organizations and accredited representatives, particularly in underserved areas.

Portuguese American Citizenship Project, Turlock California

Many Californians are not registered vote, and too many registered Californians are not voting. The June 2014 election had the lowest voter turnout percentage ever in a California statewide election. The Portuguese American Citizenship Project (PACP) is a non-partisan civil rights campaign. They have been working with communities across the United States since 1999 to combat the low voter turnout problem.
