Emergency Preparedness in the Neighborhood: Engaging Residents as Partners in Disaster Planning and Response
The report, Emergency Preparedness in the Neighborhood is available for download on the right under “Documents & Resources.”
Please also see an article on emergency preparedness from the October 2008 issue of Western City magazine.
Groups of residents on the SF Peninsula are organizing at the neighborhood level to work with local governments and prepare themselves for emergencies. In November of 2008, the Institute for Local Government’s Public Engagement program, with the City of Burlingame, convened a workshop where representatives of cities and organizations in the Peninsula region presented some remarkable new models for empowering residents to participate in disaster planning and response. A new Institute report, Emergency Preparedness in the Neighborhood, presents brief case stories of these local efforts, a list of key takeaways that emerged, as well as a set of questions for local officials and staff to promote productive dialogue among local agencies developing their capacities to engage residents in emergency preparedness.
A video podcast will soon be available of the workshop.
