Resources for Greening Fleets

Many resources exist to help counties and cities that are considering adopting policies and programs to “green their fleets” to evaluate their options. The following list includes links to four types of resources:

General Resources

  • U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center
    www.afdc.energy.gov/afdc/ contains a wide range of information and resources related to use of alternative fuels. It also includes information about other petroleum-use reduction options, such as advanced vehicles, fuel blends, idle reduction, and fuel economy.
  • U.S. Department of Energy Fuel Economy Website www.fueleconomy.gov/ includes tools to help find and compare vehicles, information about alternative fuels, vehicles performance, and other resources.
  • U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities Website www1.eere.energy.gov/cleancities provides information and resources about alternative fuels and advanced vehicles, fuel blends, fuel economy, hybrid vehicles, and idling reduction.
  • Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program
    www.energy.ca.gov/altfuels/index.html, created in 2007 by AB 118 and administered by the California Energy Commission, offers grants, loans, loan guarantees, revolving loans, and other appropriate measures to promote use of various fuel-efficient transportation technologies. Eligible recipients include public agencies.
  • AAA Greenlight Program provides information about alternative fuel and vehicle technologies and their benefits, and related events.

Comparing Different Fuel-efficient and Alternative-fuel Vehicles

  • Drive Clean Buying Guide http://www.driveclean.ca.gov/ provides informaiton on the cleanest, most efficient cars on the market and what benefits and incentives are offered by clean vehicles. It allows you to search and compare vehilces by make/mode, vehicle category, technologies, fuel types, smog score, global warming score or engine family number and calculate it's effect on you carbon footprint and the money you can save.
